Antelope Canyon #1

Antelope Canyon is one of many “slot canyons” near Page, Arizona. A slot canyon is one that is very narrow, but quite deep by comparison. Antelope is about 80’ deep, but in most parts is no more than 8-10’ wide, and in many parts the width is less than 6’. Because the walls of the canyon bend and curve around, sunlight does not generally reach the bottom of the canyon, but instead bounces off the rocks multiple times, producing an orange glow. In some sections of the canyon, it is dark enough that people use flashlights, and photo exposures can take several minutes.

There are several dozen slot canyons in northern Arizona and southern Utah, but it is estimated that as many as 10,000 more were lost to the water when the Glen Canyon dam was built, and Lake Powell created.
