Cordes, AZ

Named for John Henry Cordes, Cordes began as a stagecoach stop, then became an important point on the trip from Phoenix to Flagstaff for those traveling by automobile. When the Black Canyon Freeway (now I-17) was built, it passed about 10 miles east of Cordes, diverting traffic away from the town. In response, the town was moved to the highway, and renamed Cordes Junction. All that remains at the original site are the gas pumps, about 5 buildings, and a few members of the Cordes family.

About the picture:

I first saw Cordes during a Thanksgiving trip to Crown King. I knew that a good picture was possible, but because the pumps faced east, it would take early morning light to get the best shot. I waited until mid summer, when sunrise was the earliest, and left Pheonix for Cordes (an 85 mile drive) at about 1:00 am, arriving a little before sunrise. I began shooting shortly after the sun rose, and took this picture sometime around 5:30 in the morning.
